Two Statistical Algorithms for Ranking College Football Teams

Dr. Doug Frank

The talk concerns using team records and schedules to rank teams in the order of strength as measured by a probability. The only subjective assumption is that the better team should win the game.

We examine the goodness of the methods in a randomly chosen situation with rank correlation.  We also examine the goodness by the top 3 teams chosen. Finally we apply the best method to give a current ranking of the top 25 division one football teams.
