The Point

The area known to Pittsburgher's as "The Point" is actually the land mass that is is formed where the Allegheny and Mononghela rivers meet to form the mighty Ohio River. The origianl city of Pittsburgh grew from this point. Originally a French fort know as Fort Duquesne rested on the site, however during the French and Indian wars the English captured the fort and renamed it fort Pitt. Today the region is occupied by Point State Park. The idea to put a park on the site was originaly proposed back in 1806. However the project was not actually put into action until Oct. 26, 1945 when the announcement was made that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania would build Point State Park. The park was finished by the close of 1952.

Today Point State Park is a popular destination for people from all over. Events such as the Three Rivers Regatta and the Pittsburgh Arts Festival are very popular draws during the summertime in Pittsburgh.
