Landing Site 5: Rankin

Andrew Carnegie built the Carrie Furnaces in Rankin in 1884. The furnaces were built across the Mononghela from Homestead to supplement the newly aquired Homestead Works. The two plants were connected by a railroad bridge for the easy exchange of materials. In 1901 the Rankin plant became incorportad into the newly formed U.S. Steel Corporation, along with Carnegie's other plants at Homestead, Braddock, and Duquesne.
