Mathematics Competition

The Mathematics Department of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is sponsoring the 49th annual IUP Mathematics Competition. The purpose of the competition is to give recognition to capable students of mathematics and to arouse interest in mathematics through the solution of challenging problems.

This year's competition will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012. We realize that many activities are going on at this time of year. Parking will be available in the Stright Hall parking lot; you will not be ticketed on this day. Registration will be in room 201 of Stright Hall and students will then report to their classrooms. Registration begins at 8:30 AM and the competition begins around 9:00 AM.

The competition includes problems from algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and other topics which are included in the secondary mathematics curriculum. No calculus is included. Each school is limited to a maximum of ten students each. Students from any grade may participate but it is suggested that your most capable students enroll. You are also encouraged to bring some students from each grade. Calculators are not permitted.

Plaques will be awarded to the top six individual winners as well as the top student in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Trophies in Division I (larger enrollment schools) and Division II (small enrollment) will be awarded to the top three teams in each division. A team score is the sum of the top three individual scores from a school. Lunch will be provided so we ask for the number of students and adults who will be eating with us. We will also need to know the names of the students competing so that certificates of participation can be prepared. There will be a short presentation at 1:00 PM where the awards will be presented.

If you wish to participate, please complete the enclosed form by March 31, 2012.
