Homework Assignments

  1. Due Monday, November 24

    Required work

    1. Examine the "Age Discrimination" data that appeared on the Midsemester Exam (or see the Web site: http://www.math.iup.edu/~tshort/handouts/age_discrimination.html).

      1. Create a two-by-two table of counts that represents the numbers of employees who were 40 years old and older and those under 40 years old broken out by those terminated and those retained.

      2. Compute the proportion of employees 40 years old and older who were terminated.

      3. Compute the proportion of employees under 40 years old who were terminated.

      4. Write a paragraph summary about whether you think age discrimination occurred or not. Please refer to specific statistical evidence. You may use both the new evidence from this assignment and the results of your analysis on the Midsemester Exam if you wish.

    Optional work

    • Repeat part (a) for a different two-by-two table of counts.

  2. Due Monday, December 1

    Required work

    1. Compute the chi-square statistic for the "Age Discrimination" data that appeared on the Midsemester Exam (or see the Web site: http://www.math.iup.edu/~tshort/handouts/age_discrimination.html).

Discuss how the value of the chi-square statistic indicates whether or not age discrimination occurred.

    Optional work

    • Repeat part (a) for a different two-by-two table of counts.
