Course description

MATH 459/ELMA 559 Tecnology in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Instruction
Credits: 3

Intended to develop the knowledge, skills and perspectives required for using education technology in teaching mathematics at the elementary and middle school levels. Participants will have hands-on experiences with technology.

Pre-requisites:
MATH 152 Minimum Grade: D

Course materials

Textbook
None required.

Calculator
A TI-15 Explorer calculator.
(You must have a calculator that is able to manipulate fractions, such as the TI-15 Explorer, the TI-30Xa or Casio models FX-250HC, FX-260, FX-55, or FX-65. I recommend the TI-15 Explorer because it is relatively inexpensive and it will help if we are all using the same calculator.)

Software
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Word
Tinkerplots
Fathom

What you will learn in this course

How to succeed in this course

Grading policies

The components of your grade will include required homework assignments, optional assignments, in-class assignments, quizzes, and in-class tests.

The in-class tests will be given on Wednesday, March 3 and Wednesday, May 5. and will each be worth 100 points. For graduate students the written report and accompanying presentation will also be worth 100 points.

Your grade will be computed by finding the percentage of points you earn in the course out of the number of points available to you in the course through required and optional work.

Grade Percentage range
A 90% to 100% Advanced understanding of the course material
B 80% to 90% Basic understanding of the course material
C 70% to 80% Concern about your understanding of the course material
D 60% to 70% Deficient understanding of the course material
F 0% to 60% Seriously deficient understanding of the course material

Please note that the grade "D" is not available to graduate students. A graduate student must earn at least 70% of the points in the course to be assured of receiving a "C." Only work assigned by and submitted to the instructor of record will count toward the final grade in this course.

Attendance and late homework policies

You are expected to attend all class meetings, including presentations by other students. If you miss a class, please turn in any assignments that were due as soon as possible.

Grades for assignments turned in late will be penalized, with an increasing penalty as time passes beyond the due date, unless a legitimate excuse is approved by the instructor.

Make-up assignments and tests must be arranged on a case-by-case basis, and will be approved only with a legitimate excuse.
